1969 CAL 30 The boat for "the discriminating yachtsman who demands a high performance ocean racer, the man who would rather sail than maintain a boat and the sailing family which likes to cruise."  Billed in the original literature as a light displacement vessel, the Cal 30 ballast to displacement ratio is 32 percent. She draws less than 5 feet and has nearly 2,600 pounds of lead ballast. The foam-filled rudder rests on a bronze post and the rudder placement is unique in that it is in front of and under the feathering propeller which came standard. This placement makes for no prop walk and easy backing. The Cal 30 hull is hand-laid solid glass which is 1 inch to 1.5 inches thick in places. The deck is one piece molded glass with a marine plywood core. A through-bolted and glassed hull-to-deck joint holds it all together. The layout was designed to have a family of four cruise comfortably. A V-berth, a convertible settee with a fold down table and two quarter berths, port and starboard, provide sleeping arrangements for up to six people. Storage is good for a small boat and includes a hanging locker to starboard. Across to port is the enclosed head with a sink, a convertible vanity seat, and a hamper.  The galley is in a straight line down the starboard side with an insulated ice box, a column of drawers and a two-burner pressure alcohol stove. Battery storage is under the settee aft of the saloon table. The Cal 30 was relatively beamy for her day and at 10 feet. Her width afforded ample space below, her cabin top starts mid-foredeck and extends about two thirds of the way to the stern, leaving a large cockpit for a boat of this size, comfortable enough for six or seven people. There are two sets of tracks, one on the caprail for the genoa sheets and one on the cabin, which was meant for a working jib. The chainplates are set inboard on the cabin trunk to make for a clear deck and a single lower shroud was used to allow latitude in sail trim.Originally offered with 5 sails as optional equipment including a main, working jib, lapper, genoa and spinnaker. North and Baxter & Cicero were the brands of choice and none of the sails retailed for much more than $300. Bronze Merriman turnbuckles and toggles and bronze traditional South Coast winches completed the original deck hardware. The Cal 30 has been described by owners as a well behaved vessel with good balance on all points of sail. She will do 6 to 6.5 knots in 12 to 15 knots of wind on a beam reach. Sheeting angles are tight for good upwind performance.  Under power, the Cal 30 will travel about 5.5 knots at cruising speed.

The boat is good mechanical and structural condition. I have kept the boat in tip top condition as i have used her for chartering, sailing lessons and racing. The rigging and sails are 3 yrs old. The 30 hp Yanmar fwc diesel was rebuilt and now has about 500 hrs. The Hurth v drive transmission is 2 yrs old.The shaft and cutlass bearing are new. The topsides have been painted with a one part epoxy paint. I replaced the entire cabin top,a 500 hr project with 15 layers of glass and epoxy. I strengthened the mast step with white oak, encapsulated in the epoxy resin and cloth. There is also a stainless plate below mast step. The interior is vanished and clean. There is no stove or refrigeration. I do have a propane system and hot water tank to be installed at some time. The cushions have all been recovered. I have kept the boat light as i do race. She has a solid glass hull, built much heavier then vessels today. I also replaced the tiller with a wheel. There is an emergency tiller. The deck is plywood cored and has no problems. She has a cockpit that will accommodate 6-8 adults very comfortably. If you are looking for a boat that can sail in 25-30knt winds and is very comfortable to sail, this is the boat. It has raced to Bermuda twice. Cal built the Cal40 in 1964 and is still a winner on the race course. The Cal36 is the "Little Sister",a classic plastic winner. She has Raymarine wind speed and depth. there is a dodger frame, but no canvas dodger. The bottom was stripped and now has only one coat of ablative racing paint. I have owned her for 16 yrs and have loved every day that i sailed her. The price reflects upgrades, sea worthiness and comfort in the cockpit. The interior has a large forward cabin and bunks for.4 more people. She good use some creature comfort upgrades ,but as a vessel to enjoy in all weather conditions, the Cal 36 is a winner.

Priced to sell!! Great boat with a new survey this spring. Survey lists boat as above average conditions with a current retail value range of $14,00-18,500. Many mechanical and cosmetic improvements/updates over the last several years including a new roller furler jib sail this spring. Includes steel cradle. 1970 Cal 2-30 LOA 30' 2" Beam 9' Draft 5' 30 HP Atomic 4 The boat is priced to sell fast and includes everything you need to go sailing plus lots of extras. It’s currently in the water at beautiful Anchor Pointe Marina in Curtice, OH. The slip is available to the buyer for the rest of the season. We own the slip free and clear but obviously won’t need it anymore, so if you want the slip for next year, we will sign over ownership to you for free—you just have to pay the yearly association fee (due in February) plus about $27 per year in property taxes. Last year our cost for everything for the entire year was about $1135. That included the association fee/dock, power and water, launch and haulout, bottom wash, winter storage, summer cradle storage, and all taxes.......that’s less than most marinas charge for just the summer dock!!!! Anchor Pointe has a swimming pool, showers and flush toilets, laundry facility, gas dock with pumpout, and there are clean port-a-johns on every finger for those who don’t want to walk to the flush toilets. Plus it just has a bunch of really nice people. The Boat: 1970 Cal 2-30 (30' sailboat) The Cal was built when fiberglass sailboats were a new idea and no one knew exactly how thick the fiberglass needed to be. This boat was built to last. The hull is solid hand laid fiberglass up to 1 ½" thick. The keel is encapsulated in fiberglass with no keel bolts to worry about. HOBO is all fixed up and ready for her next adventure. The boat includes: Description of Equipment: 3 Type III PFD’s, 1 Type IV LifeSling 2 Type IV Square cushion throwables SOS flag SOS blinking flashlight 2 BC:1 hand held fire extinguishers Hand held refillable air horn and pump First aid kit Danforth S920 anchor with ~10' of chain and ~150' of ½" nylon line Anchor “ball” Manual Bilge pump 12 Volt bilge pump Oil and Waste Discharge stickers Oil absorbent cloths Uniden Atlantis 250 VHF Radio Apelco 260 fishfinder/depthsounder Garmin GPSMAP 76C (Color GPS) Paper chart of Lake Erie Chart No. 1 Swim ladder Deck broom Grabber tool Boat hook 4 dock lines 3 fenders Wheel steering with spare tiller Winch handles Winch covers Main, Genoa, Jib, and sail bags Shore power cord Microwave Bug screens Air conditioner with hood Clip fan 2 110V lights 6 12V lights (built in) Fitted v-berth mattress pad V-berth sheet set with fitted bottom sheet 4 couch pillows Newly painted steel cradle Engine oil, Fogging oil, Marvel Mystery oil Spare transmission cover gasket Left over bilge and deck paint Multimeter, safety glasses Non-glass inspection mirror Equipment manuals Boat and engine information folders Wood mast supports for mast-down winter storage Two fitted tarps with tie down lines for mast-up winter storage (tarps are worn---for use as templates---quick & easy to install, tight fit, lasts several winters) Misc parts and things I forgot to list. Aquarius is easy to single hand, is great for day sailing yet sleeps five to six in four bunks (two in the fore-peak, one to two amidships, one on either side of the engine bay that has drop down sides for engine access). She's great for either a beginner or a seasoned sailor. O'Days are very popular, often raced, and there are several internet sites with information, forums and and offering of parts. I've had the pleasure of owning Aquarius for ten years now and I love her. We're relocating and after much procrastinating I realize that the ocean will just be too far way. The previous owners had her in Oyster Bay NY for many years. She is surprisingly fast yet very stable (2,230 lb lead keel) - although not suggested, we've powered through 6'-8' seas with her. She sails very close to the wind, is roomy with loads of storage, and you can stretch out on the 6'-6" cockpit seats with custom cushions (both with lockers beneath) or seat several. There's approximately 6' headroom. She has a 30 horse power Universal Atomic Four engine whereas most boats her size have either 9.9 HP outboards (which cavitate in lumpy water) or 7 to 13 HP diesels. She starts fast, runs clean. Uses about a gallon an hour. These are so popular that new parts are still made for it - even an optional hand crank! Here's one major source of new parts, service and info: moyermarine.com. She has a new jacket side plate from Moyer Marine. There's incredibly easy access to the engine from both sides and the front. There's even an engine "room" light. She has the original 12 gallon main gas tank along with the then optional 6 gallon plastic auxiliary tank (located on a shelf in the port side locker). Aquarius was made just before the cost of oil, gas and related resins sky-rocketed and caused many boat companies to skimp on construction and then to go out of business. Her hull is solid fiberglass - no balsa to worry about, and is about 3/8" thick. The prop is bronze. The prop shaft is bronze with a recent sacrificial zinc. I consider her the best year - 1975 had the best interior layout and has a lead ballasted fin keel with skeg mounted rudder (offering some protection to it). She has a 4' draft and nice freeboard which allows for usually dry sailing and calm guests.. My son worked at West Marine during school which gave us great discounts - she has new lifelines, new lazy jacks on the main boom, new main-sheet, new bronze thru-hull valves and Y-valve for the macerator toilet, new VHF radio, solar powered charger to keep her batteries charged between use, original Loran C, new coil and ignition parts, new water pump impeller, new engine exhaust pipe to the water muffler, new rubber diaphragm on her bilge pump, a cockpit tent in almost new shape, recent 12 volt receptacle, dual batteries with selector and gauge, tiller steering with nice looking new laminated wood tiller, old auto tiller, dual cockpit scuppers, cockpit cushions, anchor, teak and stainless steel swim ladder between the split stainless steel rear pulpit, auto-tiller, loads of storage, two sinks, cabin lights, electric macerator toilet between the fore peak and the main cabin with folding teak doors for privacy, curtains, cabin inclinometer, hanging locker, cockpit "table" (portable, that spans across the seats), storage under all the berths, a 12v hand vacuum, carpeting, a large ice box under a lid in the counter that drains to outside, alcohol stove plus a propane grill that attaches to hang off of the stern. There's a GPS/Depth sounder along with the original one that still works by a light revolving within its face and is entertaining to watch. There's roller furling, a wind vane and radio aerial atop the mast, stainless bow pulpit, a boom vang, a whisker pole for downwind sailing, genoa in reasonable shape, two jibs (one is older and a bit soiled), two mainsails (one also is older and a bit soiled). Two new stainless fishing rod holders, I've several life jackets, am/fm/cd stereo, full safety equipment including fire extinguishers, radar reflector ball, first aide kit, floodlight, Lifesling overboard rescue system, a flare gun, horn, boat hook etc. I can throw in a new medium sized dog life jacket if the buyer needs it. The upholstery is in very good condition. Loads of interior teak in good condition. The former owner gave us the original set of plastic dishes, silverware and ice tongs, and I'll give them to the new owner so they can stay with the boat. What I'm aware of: minor scars from dock battles etc, and a couple of soft deck spots which I was planning on repairing this season. The hardware & connections to the hull have been resealed over the years and should be checked. We had a problem with gunk in the main tank so we had it drained and we were planning on replacing it. We've been running off of the 6 gallon tank which has given us more than enough range. The sink hand pumps aren't working but I've a new electric pump to pressurize the system waiting to be installed (Whale offers refurbishment kits if you'd rather hand pump). The hatch boards are ready for replacement, last year there was minor weeping at the toilet - it may need tightening or a new gasket, and there's some minor rust here and there on the engine. Very little rain water weeps in from the ports - I do a yearly sealing but this year haven't gotten to it yet. She's a pretty dry boat. Aquarius has loads of spare parts including a new small holding tank for the toilet, new deck hardware along with a good-sized used winch for the cabin top to make single handling even easier, new electric water pump to pressurize the water system, new electric bilge pump - all ready to be installed. Obviously I love the boat - we weren't planning on moving from Brooklyn but the house that we've bought was an amazing deal in a historic small town and we realized that's where we want to semi-retire. She's out of the water in Gateway Marina (opposite Floyd Bennett Field) in Brooklyn open to the bay and to the ocean. The marina owes us a launch but it seemed to make sense to allow prospective buyers a look at her bottom. Here's more info: oday.sailboatowners.com, odayowners.com and iheartodays.com/model_oday_27 There was an ad in Craigslist for her but it was put in without my knowledge by a marina service employee. It was taken off. The boat is sold as is, and will need to be picked up or sailed from her location in Gateway Marina, Brooklyn, NY by the new owner. Storage and shipping arrangements are the responsibility of the purchaser. You may see the boat by appointment. She is fairly priced - serious offers only please.
