The Owner had the bottom painted a year an a half ago, but to get it back to its original classic look - it's been suggested that sand blasting the hull prior to the next paint would be of value. The 1967 Don Larson has been a solid Commercial Fishing Vessel for years. The current Owner worked the vessel the last 3 seasons. The 57 foot solid steel hull has weathered multiple storms, and takes rough weather quite well for its small size. The Don Larson is capable of staying out at sea for over a month at a time. This boat was formerly known as the Medallion and was used to fish salmon as well as tuna. It has been known to be a good catcher, an important detail in salmon and tuna fishing; needless to say, it has no problems catching fish. ABOUT THIS BOAT: Wooden driftboats are great for fishing because they allow a “perfect drift” fly presentation and do it quietly without the rattle and tinny ding of fiberglass and aluminum. They draw less water than a canoe or other river craft and float right over objects that will hang a canoe or john boat. In high flow conditions the high freeboard and rocker provide a worthy platform for running class IV conditions that swamp even white water canoes. This boat was professionally built in 2001 by a small craft naval architect utilizing yacht grade materials, construction details and finishes. The drawings used were adapted from Don Hill's 16' Standard Driftboat. The boat has floated every Arkansas tail water where trout run, the undammed warm waters of the Buffalo River from Ponca to the White River, the Big Piney Creek including running “The Mother” several times. In addition to being an excellent platform for fly-fishing, the boat is great for quietly enjoying some of the most remote areas during multi-day camping trips. While it has a flat transom that will accept a long shaft outboard motor, the boat has never been under power as her builder strongly believes it can ruin the experience of drifting slowly, taking it all in and really getting to know the river bottom structure and the best holes. In areas where there are more boats, people and houses along the rivers and streams, this boat makes for great conversation and has made many friends. The boat really resonates with the “inner boat geek” of people; this is something you’ll need to be ready for. Finding a riverbank site to overnight is very easy with this boat and invitations to camp on private property are offered without having to ask. Be prepared to answer questions and entertain offers from people to buy the boat or to build one for them. Many ask about maintenance and upkeep of a bright (clear varnished) wooden boat and if it is too much work and cost to maintain. Unlike fiberglass and aluminum, making repairs requires no special tools. The skills to keep it up are easily acquired. All one needs is 220 or greater grit sand paper, a good natural bristle brush, quality marine spar varnish and some mineral spirits to occasionally touch up any worn areas. Depending on use, the finish over time will get scratched and gets worn but all that is necessary to bring it back to showroom condition is a light sanding, remove the dust and re-coat with varnish. The process can be done over a weekend working at a leisurely pace. This boat has undergone that process 3 times in 14 years. Keep in mind that if you want to keep fiberglass and aluminum boats looking nice they too require cleaning and occasional repairs or maintenance and special know-how and tools. 1978 Pete and Don 24 PETE AND DON 24 24' P/D 1978 24' P/D with Ford 351W pushing 340 HP. Boat was completely restored in 2013-2014. Motor rebuilt in '09 with paper work along with new gas tank. An original 1969 Formula 233 designed by Don Aronow at Thunderbird, and was the original "The Cigarette" boat(see first picture) that revolutionized offshore boat hulls. This was my boat from 2008-2013 and used regularly. I pulled the original Mercruiser 165 to rebuild in 2013 and never put it back together due to having a new boat given to me. The engine and outdrive are not included in the auction. However, the trailer is included. The boat has been sitting in my barn for 2 years and needs to find a new home. The canvas was new in 2011, but is filthy from sitting. The cockpit sole(floor) is pretty solid. Carpeting was removed, and I had replaced a soft spot by the engine compartment with new marine plywood and fiberglass(see newly painted white area). Much of the teak was recently refinished with Sikkens. The 2 pedestal chairs are also brand new and have not been completely installed(see pictures). The cabin doors were also refinished but are not screwed back on(set in place for pictures). Boat was used only in freshwater(Lake St. Clair). I apologize that I forgot to take pictures of the cuddy cabin, but there is little to be seen-it's dirty, but not scary. Gage cluster was totally rewired with modern marine electricals, complete with a new fuse block. Much work has been done to this boat, but much still needs to be done. Bring your own powerplant-boat could have been ordered with single inline 6, twin inline 6's, single small block, twin small block or single big block! This is an amazing off-shore hull(just google Don Aronow formula 233 "the Cigarette") that is becoming very hard to find(at least one that is not a total wreck). It is on the original trailer that tracks and pulls well with newer bearings and bearing buddies. Trailer tires have excellent tread and are not checked or cracking(stored inside). The trailer winch will be re-installed before the winner comes to pick up the boat(just replaced retrieval eye on boat). Please ask questions and bid to win! NOTE: Someone had it retitled as a 1973 at some point-lost title? It is free and clear, and I will transfer title to you at pickup. I could part this out, but I would like to see it go somewhere it will be put back on the water.
