View Large Images ? ? Description Built by Ditchburn Boats of Lake Muskoka, Ontario, the 'Malolo' (Flying Fish in Hawaiian), was originally custom built for Casper Erholm of Lake Whatcom, WA in 1927. Ditchburn Boats were known as the Rolls Royce of boats at the time and were considered to be one of the premier speed boat and yacht builders in the world. They also built racing boats, twice winning the Gold Cup and the Harmsworth Trophy once. This fabulous example is thought to be one of only about two-dozen remaining worldwide, with the majority being restored and residing in eastern Canada. It was exceptionally fast for its day, going 28 miles per hour. It is powered by a Grey Marine four-90 Fireball racing engine and has Dual Carburettors and High Compression. It had to run on aviation fuel at that time. The Malolo's original owner, Casper Erholm, was the son of Charles Erholm, the 'Finnish Laundry King of Bellingham', who founded Pacific Steam Laundry in 1889. In 1921, Erholm's son Casper began his apprenticeship in the family business. One can only imagine the young and entitled playboy cruising in what may have been Lake Whatcom's fastest boat. The Malolo plied the waters of Lake Whatcom from 1927 to 1959, when it suffered hull damage from hitting a dead head. It went into storage and stayed there until 2005, when its stewardship was passed to the passionate master-crafters at Glen Cove Boatworks. The restoration was undertaken by craftsmen Richard Montag, Tom Walton and Terry Buzzard, along with assistance and advice from many others, including historians from the Lake Whatcom Motor Boat Club. With an eye toward keeping this very special and rare watercraft as near to original as possible, the team painstakingly restored 'Malolo'. The result is an absolutely stunning piece of American boat building history that is sure to impress even the snobbiest boaters. The engine refurbishment was entrusted to the legendary Hy Twiford. Hy starting working with his dad at the Cleveland Yacht Club in the family boat repair business, Twiford Marine Services. He had an innate ability to fix anything, especially if it had to do with boats or boat engines. Jim Rowland of Jim's Upholstery hand-crafted the leather seats, Clawson Instruments expertly refurbished the gauges, the electrical system was restored by Ken Benthien. Larry Oliverson masterfully applied the graphics. The silver highlights are actually Palladium leaf, which is about 5-times more expensive than Gold leaf. Every effort has been made to fully describe the various details of the vessel which is on a private lift in Fairview Beach, Virginia. Photographs document the classic lines, restoration and performance. The vessel is a privately owned, fully restored, 1973 Bertram 25’ Flybridge, purchased by the owner in 1998. It should be noted that the owners have invested in excess of $40,000 above its original purchase price in upgrades and restoration. Documentation of all repairs, upgrades and restoration is available for potential purchasers to review. History of the Vessel Since 1998, the vessel has been housed at the owner’s private deep-water lift and has been professionally winterized, shrink wrapped and stored on her lift each winter. Owners are amenable to sea trials and private dock viewing. Mechanical and Cosmetic Restoration and the Performance of the Vessel The Rainmaker has a V-berth with stand-up head for overnight outings. Her mechanical restoration included the installation of brand new twin Mercruiser 135 engines, outdrives and lower units whose out-of-crate installation occurred in 2004. The engines have accumulated less than 200 hours since that time. In addition, the flybridge and lower cabin helm were outfitted with all new throttle cables, steering cables and shift cables. The vessel can comfortably be controlled from either the lower helm or upper flybridge. The owner had the boat’s props properly pitched and “dialed-in” so the vessel cruises comfortably at 18kph. The entire exterior has been professionally restored. Bertram is renowned for their high quality manufacturing standards and as such, this vessel’s hull is crafted of high-impact, multi-laminate fiberglass. After purchasing the vessel in 1993, the owners restored the vessel to “as new” condition. The original existing gel coat was professionally removed and the hull was restored with an epoxy primer coat and lustrous new top gel coat which is evident in the photos provided. 1997 Bayliner Meridian 3388 33 feet, loa 40', 11'6" beam, 2'8" draft, upper and lower helm, hydraulic steering, well built heavy (16000 lbs) boat. Brunswick owns Bayliner, Sea Ray, Mercruiser, Mercury Outboards, Cabo, Hatteras, and Boston Whaler. All made with the same materials and engineering. Boat is almost all original, all original upholstery, fair condition some upholstery may need replacing but is good enough for me. 2 marine AC units are ice cold, stereo for upper and lower, dual steering stations, new bottom paint. BOAT RUNS GREAT! Boat has the original carpet, and is in good condition. Big kitchen with double sink, gas burners and oven, microwave, lots of stroage area, , hot water heater. The windows do not leak, never have! No damage history on the boat. This boat brand is now called Meridan, they are high quality boats going for high prices. This has straight shafts, NOT A V-DRIVE OR OUT DRIVE. This has straight shafts, 1.5 inch diameter shafts, dripless shaft seals, ZF gears (they drip some, but very little), motors spin the same way and counter rotating is done in the port gear. Bilge is very clean, I have never seen the bilge pumps work because theres never any water in there. All the Bilge pumps and switches were replaced a year ago. Batteries 1 year old, 3 of them. Very stout rudders and struts, new cutlass bearings. It has the small block GM Mercruiser 350 C.I. , 5.7 liter gas engines, small block chevys GMC, the most reliable marine engine ever made. 1000+ hours on the engine hour meters from new, however it did have new long blocks in 2007? I have no documentation on that. Motors are fresh water cooled, have new risers, run perfect start easy, no leaking/burning/smoking oil. Trawler economy! 3 MPG at 7.5 knots, 2.5 GPH, then 16 GPH at 20 knots. Boat does have some minor cosmetic issues that you cant see with a camera, scratch and chip here and there, all typical with a 17 year old Florida boat! What attracted me this boat was the King size bed in the mid cabin (under the salon) and the large V-birth, easily sleep 6+. It's a real king size bed too! Has Raymarine ST6001 autopilot, Standard Horizon large screen GPS chart plotter, depth finders at both stations, windless with foot switches, VHF, etc. Westerbeke 5KW gas generator has 322 hours, runs good but needs stator for back end. Just spent 3K on cutlass bearings, zincs, misc, and bottom paint 8 months ago. Lowest priced one on Yacht world is 39K, Clear florida title in my name, registered in Fla. Boat is in Key Largo and can be viewed prior to auction end. TRADE? Would consider a very nice trailer boat 21-25 nothing older than 2000, with outboard or shamrock. Power is sufficient for pleasure cruising with a pair of 8V71 Naturals. Whether as a summer home or a vacation getaway, this boat has been meticulously maintained and run every season. This boat runs as well as it looks. The hulls and superstructure are built like a tank with the bottoms about an inch thick with balsa cored sides and decks. These are first rate production motor yachts. Service requirements are relatively minor if the previous owner has kept up with maintenance. Virtually any yard can work on these boats and is familiar with them. That's the advantage of long-term production. With her 15'10" beam this is a big 50 footer and the layout takes maximum advantage of that space. Most people love the galley down layout with the dinette opposite which is great for informal meals. The large Salon is the nucleus of this popular vessel. The distinct Lower Helm is situated in the forward quarter and has been redesigned to incorporate well with the living area for time spent underway or at dock. The salon is ample sized and features a comfortable convertible sofa and flat screen TV. All windows feature blinds. The headliner and carpet were replaced in the summer of 2005.
