1983 Pearson Flyer
FOR SALE STAMFORD CT; 30 ft Pearson Flyer with excellent sails, inboard BMW diesel engine, nice maintained, many upgrades, and in the water ready to sail.
The Flyer was launched as a one-design racer in the 1980s, but never really took off. As a result, Flyers are scattered all over the United States. Today these boat PHRF rate extremely well and are now extremely popular in the club racing circuits. They are fast able sailors able to take off in light winds and still stand up to a blow. The high aspect main makes this boat a treat to sail under main alone.
The Flyer's uncluttered deck layout works well for a race crew, and the roomy interior (thanks to 11 feet of beam) means the 30-footer can perform double duty as a weekend cruiser. Down below there's bunk space for five, with two bunks tucked under the cockpit seats, and two settee berths in the main cabin, and one berth in the forepeak along with great storage for running gear. A fully enclosed head sits to starboard, just forward of the primary bulkhead, and the foc'sle is wide open and perfect for sail storage and spinnaker douses. The engine is under the companionway ladder, and a small galley and nav station sit to starboard and port, respectively, well away from the companionway, just forward of the settee berths. The sunken 8-foot cockpit is roomy and ergonomically comfortable, and the mainsheet traveler is out from underfoot, mounted immediately aft of the companionway. Halyards and control lines lead aft from the mast to two banks of jammers located on either side of the companionway. The aluminum, two-spreader rig is keel-stepped and carries a slightly overlapping headsail and a tall, high-aspect-ratio main. Flyers were built with balsa-cored decks and hulls.
This boat has been upgraded with a cruiser friendly cabin interior. The head is fully enclosed for privacy, and an additional berth has been added to the foc’sle. The cabin features warm wood paneling and a teak and holly sole. Head room is 5’ 8” but the berths are all 6 ft or greater, the after berths will accommodate giants.
Here is a fine boat in great condition that will accommodate a family of five or swamp the competition in around the buoys competition.
The BMW diesel is mounted under the cockpit and easily accessed or even removed. At 7 hp, she will push the boat at 4/5 knots and burns about a quarter gallon of fuel per hour.
The helm is a tradition outboard rudder and tiller. The Autohelm auto pilot and the Davis Tiller Tamer puts this boat in a single hand class for the solitary sailor. The over large cockpit will accommodate about as many guests as a body could want on a 30 ft boat.
This is an exceptional boat at an exceptional value for any person who enj
