This is a steel hulled boat project that was always operated in fresh water (Missouri River, in South Dakota, no rust) manufactured in Louisiana by the folks that made "swiftboats". Wood and fiberglass wheelhouse needs rebuilding. (We will include 11 newer style windows). Boat has twin Detroit Diesel supercharged 6-71's, one showed 900 hours, was torn down for inspection, looked good, but as long as it was apart, valve job was done, and rings and bearings replaced. This motor now has only run-in and dyno time. (dyno'd at 251 hp) Second motor showed 660 hours was not disassembled. These engines counter-rotate and have Allision 1.5:1 transmissions, and brass propellers. Included is the boats original lighting (1- mile- ray search light, nav and interior), fog horn, 4 cyl diesel generator (12k), fire suppression bottle (35#), stainless steel rudders, propeller shafts, controls and instrumentation. Boat has been in dry dock for approx. 15 years, both engines turn freely. This boat was spec'd by the Corp of Engineers in 1953, and was operated as a passenger transport. Again this boat will need a complete refit. Motors alone are worth the asking price.

As far as performance, Practical Sailor has this to say, "Boat for boat she will sail by Morgan 41s, Irwin 44s, CSY 44s, Westsails and their ilk.", and "The boat does have speed and liveliness that exceeds that of most out and out cruising boats of her size, and in many conditions can rival the performance of the many so called racer-cruisers or performance cruisers." Both the main and mizzen sails are fully battened, improving both the performance and convenience of sailing. Hull and deck construction is hand laminated fiberglass with balsa core. There is 6'0" headroom through out the cabin.  Interior joinery is handcrafted in ash with oak trim. Teak and holly sole. All sail controls lead aft so that one need not leave the cockpit to hoist, reef or douse sails. The freestanding masts are specially constructed in carbon fiber for strength and lightness, and the booms are aluminum. Edson wheel steering and emergency tiller are standard. Bow and stern pulpits are stainless steel, with double life lines and aluminum toe rails.   Accommodations All the wood below is varnished ash with cedar strips. The warmth and illusion of spaciousness imparted by these light colored woods will appeal to many sailors. The cabin sole is teak and holly. "The stowage capacity of the Freedom 33 is by far the best we have seen in a boat this size." (Practical Sailor) With the mast right forward in the stem, the hull fullness must be carried forward to support the weight. Consequently, the forward cabin Vee berth is roomy with good stowage under and with full length shelves. Head and hanging locker are next aft port and starboard respectively. The door to the head is curved giving more room inside the head/shower. The main salon has a U-shaped settee and a handsome gimballed table with folding leaves to port. A long bench is opposite to starboard with excellent stowage. The galley is port side aft. There is ample counter space and a huge galley drywell incorporating a sliding section for seldom used items. The fore and aft chart table is large and comfortable with good stowage and a large shelf for electronics and books. Behind the chart table is a comfortably wide quarter berth. This Peterson Formosa 46 is a special boat and is ready for Bluewater sails throughout the world. We obtained this boat when its captain owner of 30+ years was told he could not sail again. Up until this past season, this boat made regular journeys to Bermuda and throughout the Atlantic Northeast. She has been well maintained, updated where approopriate and still holds its original design elements and charm. We welcome a survey and sea trial to ensure it is the right boat for you. It comes with all the sails, and all are in great condition. There is also a BRAND NEW MAIN sail coming with the boat. The generator has been eliminated in favor of a 1 horsepower diesel engine powering an alternator charging large capacity batteries. This was done as the prvious owner didn't like the groan of a diesel generator running while enjoying air conditioned sleep. This system was just completed and is a state of the art system. What is a Peterson Formosa? The Kelly Peterson 46 and her smaller sister, the 44, have a place in the hearts of cruisers. One interested client I met said, Oh theres a Kelly here? in a soft, careful tone that let on a tender affection for the feminine name. Calling one Kelly feels like naming a lover. These are beautiful boats with nice overhangs, sweet sheer, and spectacular sailing skills. They were meant to sail about the best possible in all conditions. In the 1970s, Jack Kelly was a San Diego, California yacht broker. Seeing what all his clients were looking for, he decided to build the perfect boat. He joined with designer Doug Peterson famous from racing designs such as the Van De Stadts Storm Vogel. In 1976, they came up with a centercockpit performance cruiser instead of the aft cockpit Valiant 40. Kelly thought he might build 10, sell 9, and go cruising. Instead, he built about 200 44s in Taiwan over a six year production run. Formosa Yachts, another yard in Taiwan, started building an 2 extended variation of the 44 they called the 46 Formosa in the early 1980s. Jack Kelly extended the 44 into the 46 Kelly Peterson. This review will mostly deal with the 46-foot versions. These two are much more prized in the brokerage market. Overview A collaboration between designer Doug Peterson and yacht broker Jack Kelly birthed the Kelly Peterson 44, she was quite ahead of her time at her introduction in 1975. A long distance center-cockpit cruiser by design, she has earned a reputation for speedy passages. 180 miles days are not uncommon, with useful performance coming in all wind conditions and points of sail. Today the design is a classic, Kelly Petersons have traveled far and wide and are often seen in far flung locations the world over, especially in the South Pacific. Many have circumnavigated. History Legend has it Jack Kelly, a San Diego yacht broker in search of his ultimate cruising boat, approached yacht designer Doug Peterson who at the time was already starting to make his mark on the racing scene. The boat he drew for Kelly kicked off a narrative, not all that uncommon in the cruising boat industry. It reminds us of the tales behind theValiant 40 and the Alajuela 38 to name a couple. In this particular case the plan was to build ten boats, sell nine, keeping one to sail away. A couple of hundred hulls later, Kelly hadnt left for his voyage but had a thriving boat building business instead. First ImpressionsEssentially, the 44 Kelly Peterson was a double ender with her stern cut-off. This made a rather abrupt ending to a pleasing design. The 46-footers added a counter stern which improves her tremendously. The design has a low profile trunk cabin and sleek fast look. The bow has a moderate rake allowing a soft motion and clean entry. The beam is carried slightly aft of midships. Her sheer curves gently up forward giving 2 inches more of freeboard. Lovely teak frames the rail and handles. I really like her look. Underneath, Peterson was a racing designer, and his skeg hung rudder and long fin keel are fast. There is more wetted surface than you see these days. The keel is slightly greater than most look for at 64. Okay for Jack Kelly on the West Coast but unfortunate for the Bahamas. The beefy 2 spreader cutter rig has more than 1000 square feet of sail area. She is not undercanvased. ConstructionThe construction depends on the manufacturer, and it is hard to make generalizations. Her hull almost guaranteed to be the common Taiwan construction of mat and roving with polyester resin. The deck and trunk cabin are cored with plywood. The hull-deck joint is the common lip-tongue. Most 44s had iron internal ballast while the Queen Long 46s had ten thousand pounds of lead. I have heard of solid glass rudders. Configuration Probably the most noticeable feature of the Kelly Peterson 44 is a near vertical transom, the boat was designed as a double ender with her transom lopped off, making for an abrupt finish to an otherwise pleasing shape. The bow has a fine entry with a moderate rake and the maximum beam is carried slightly aft of midships. Below the waterline theres a fin keel cutaway at the forefoot and aft which reduces her wetted surface, good for both light-air performance and a nimble turning radius. The keel has a relatively long run which helps the boat to track well. A full-size molded-in skeg supports the rudder and provides good protection during the occasional grounding. Protected also is the prop, mounted in an aperture between the skeg and the rudder. One third of her light to moderate displacement of 30,000 pounds is encapsulated in her ballast slung low on her 6 4 keel. This combined with her clean bow entry helps her produce a nice soft motion. Above deck the on this center-cockpit boat is a low-profile cabin trunk which is both sleek and practical in that it aids a lower center of gravity. The cockpit is capaciously social with seating for 8 at a squeeze under anchor. The deck layout is good, with wide side decks bordered by 4 bulwarks and comfortingly high lifelines. Theres both bow and stern pulpits. A large cockpit locker provides for deck storage. Designed for Californian conditions, the Kelly Peterson 44 is driven by a beefy twin spreader cutter rig carrying more than 1000 square feet of canvas, ample for a boat of this displacement. Its also very manageable for a short-handed crew. The mast rises 60 feet above the waterline, keel-stepped, with 3/8 cap shrouds, headstay and backstay. The mainsail sheeting line is on the end of the 17-foot boom, which keeps it out of the cockpit area. The original boats had large mainsails going to the end of the boom, which produced too much weather helm, subsequent boats trimmed the length of the foot 30 inches. Layout [Kelly Peterson 44 Layout] Down below theres a useful three cabin layout (including the saloon) that serves well for both cruising and living aboard. The interior is bright and well ventilated from the three large hatches and twelve portlights. The forward cabin has a vee berth with full standing room and shares an enclosed head with shower aft. The saloon is a bright and open space featuring a straight settee to starboard. Opposite, the main cabin dinette to port has a two position table which converts to another double berth. Centered in the saloon, the keel stepped mast makes for a safe handhold when at sea. The offset companionway hatch allows for a well-equipped U-shaped galley sited to port and has large capacity refrigeration and a gimbaled stove. The double stainless steel sink is close to the centerline and works well on any tack. Starboard of the galley is a full sized, sit down chart table and electrical switch panel. There is an inside passageway to the aft cabin on starboard which provides access to a large engine room encompassing the remainder of the mid ships beam. The master stateroom aft includes a full double berth, and a private head. Additional access to the aft stateroom is offered through a second companionway from the cockpit. Access to the bilge and engine is excellent. Most boats had a 62hp Perkins 4-152 Diesel. Construction The boats were heavily constructed in hand-laid fiberglass matt and roving with polyester resin. Thicknesses range from nearly one inch at the bilges, tapering to 3/4 inches at the waterline and a half inch at the deck. The integral keel encapsulates 10,000 pounds of iron ballast packed with concrete. The rudder consists of a stainless-steel frame, packed with plywood and sheathed in fiberglass. The deck-to-hull joint is a lip-tongue arrangement with a wood brace inserted between the joint in some areas, then fiberglassed over. A teak cap rail was screwed into the wood brace. The plywood-cored decks were finished in non-skid gelcoat as standard but some were optionally fitted with teak decking. Overall construction is known to be solid, one story goes that a Kelly Peterson went aground on a reef in the South Pacific. The boat was pulled across the reef over a hundred feet before sailing away. Under Sail True to Doug Petersons reputation as a racing boat designer, the Kelly Peterson 44 is well known to make fast passages. The theoretical hull speed is 8.3 knots and owners report this is possible on all points of sail given the right conditions. 180 mile days are very attainable. She is well balanced and despite long rudder control lines reaching from her centre cockpit, the feedback at the helm is surprisingly good. The boat is relatively easy to single hand, even in a blow. The 46 even has an entrance through the portside combing. I could not find the key when showing a KP 46, so I opened this combing up. We jumped through to see the interior. It is a surprising entrance. The 46 both Formosa and KP have lengthened cockpits. They are centercockpit cutter rigged and great room, full wide decks. Down below, aft is a centerline queen. These are 2 staterooms like a Hylas 44 with the V-berth forward. A galley is portside no double walkthrough. And there is space on the KP 46 where that portside combing opens for a workroom. UnderwayShe has a long fin keel and skeg hung rudder. She sails fast and even well offshore reeling off 180 mile days in the trades with ease. She was meant to sail well in any wind. Her sheerline sharply increases forward making her a dryer than usual centercockpit. The 44 and later 46 was a popular charterboat used by Bill Stevens of Stevens Caribbean Charters in the 1980s. He would purchase them from Queen Long in Taiwan and commission them at his North Carolina yard. This relationship further developed with the legendary Stevens / Hylas 47. ConclusionKellys sell for up to $200,000 on the used market. There is usually a good selection of them as they produced many hulls. At our dealership we work very hard to accurately describe our vehicles through text descriptions and elaborate photos. When you purchase a pre-owned vehicle it is not a new vehicle. Any used vehicle can have normal wear and blemishes. Before placing a bid please read the descriptions thoroughly and view all of the pictures. Car Connections USA, Inc was founded in an effort to fix much of what we believe is wrong with the car industry. Dave graduated from the Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania in 1996. After graduation, Dave spent 6 years working in Public Accounting and Consulting for PricewaterhouseCoopers,LLP. A Word From Our Founder: During my tenure at PwC, people would often ask me to help them find, buy or sell cars. It frustrated me to no end to have only limited ability to help people negotiate. Frankly, I was disgusted by the lack of knowledge and professionalism in the automobile industry. In 2002, I resigned my position with PwC to chase my dream in the automobile industry. I committed all of my resources to building an automobile business based upon knowledge, integrity and value. Today, our Dealership provides these three factors to our clients. We offer you our knowledge at no cost. If you have a question about a car you own or are considering buying, we encourage you to contact us for advice. We offer integrity by giving honest advice and honest descriptions of the cars we sell. If you ask us to compare one of our cars and another one you’re considering, we will give you accurate data about both cars to help you decide upon the right one. Value is offered in our low prices. We sell our cars consistently for thousands below franchise dealer prices. How much are you willing to pay for marble floors and fancy showrooms? We operate on a low overhead model that enables us to sell cars with minimal markup. We know your time is valuable and we appreciate your taking time to learn more about our organization. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have. We are looking forward to making your next car buying experience a positive one! Today, the Sylvan brand is part of the Smoker Craft Family…” with manufacturing facilities in New Paris, Indiana. For 2013, Sylvan offers an incredible thirty models of pontoon boats from nineteen to twenty-seven feet in four series from the luxuriously appointed Mandalay series through the Signature to the more basic Mirage Cruise series to the versatile Mirage Fish series. The Mirage Cruise 8522 LZ at 23’10” long on a full 8’6” beam is the second largest in this series and offers basic but very comfortable cruising amenities and is rated for a maximum carrying capacity of twelve persons or 2200 pounds. As with all Sylvan pontoon boats, it is constructed, in Sylvan’s words, with “Exclusive Cross Channel Construction features heavy-duty hat channels double through-bolted to the deck risers. Deck and Floor features 3/4" 7-ply pressure-treated plywood through-bolted and screwed to the hat channels. Lifetime limited warranty. Spacers between the fence bottom and the deck allow water to drain easily and cut drying time in half. Fencing is foam-backed to prevent rattling and reinforced for added strength. Gate construction offers the safety of pinch-proof protectors and Posi-Lock® latches. Stainless steel safety rails are used exclusively for increased strength and reliability. Powder coated railings provide a clean look and feel.” This particular model comes standard with two, .080” gauge round pontoon “tubes.” Depending upon your cruising needs in terms of normal loading capacity, rough water boating, or speed requirements for watersports, etc, you may wish to upgrade to a third centre tube, add lifting strakes to those tubes, or go all the way with Sylvan’s Revolutionary Planing Technology (RPT) tube design with Vshaped tubes which, in Sylvan’s words, provide “increased top speed per horsepower and dramatically improved fuel efficiency.” The addition of a third tube raises the maximum horsepower rating from 150 to 200. As with all Sylvan, Starcraft, and Smoker Craft boats in the family, its boats come with a limited lifetime warranty on hull and structure plus a 6-year warranty on all components, carpet, upholstery, and electronics. All parts and labour are included in this warranty and it is transferrable to a second owner. Sylvan refers to this particular model as a “Sunbathers Delight.” “Lounge your days away on the water in the Mirage Cruise 8522 LZ. You and your friends can enjoy those days under the sun relaxing in one of four beautiful premium loungers or jump on out and use the convenient rear entry ladder to enjoy your favorite sports on the water.” And let there be no doubt that virtually every bit of floor space is dedicated to seating. It has two facing loungers in the bow section, a complete wrap-around U-shaped lounge in the stern section with a removable centre section to accommodate a centre rear gate leading to the aft deck. Amidships are the starboard side driver’s consoles and swivel helm chair with slider and armrests and a similar passenger chair opposite on the port side immediately behind the side entry gate. A bow entry gate separates the two bow lounges. The beauty of this Mirage Cruise 8522 LZ is that it comes equipped with the basic standard necessities, but you can then option it up to your heart’s content with only those particular items you want from a very long and complete list of possibilities. Let’s explore that list. On the floor, 22-oz. sculptured carpet is standard or you can opt for 28-oz. carpet or vinyl flooring with or without snap-in carpet. A custom molded helm console with windscreen and basic gauges are standard and you can add a full complement of gauges such as speedometer, volt meter, trim, depth gauges and hydraulic steering too. Stereo and docking lights are standard and add underwater, under deck, and floor lighting. A change room is standard and add the porta potti. Tables with two floor bases are standard; add a second table and floor base. Bimini tops are standard and add a full complement of canvas options. Rear entry boarding ladders is standard, but choose to add a swim platform or you may even choose a The Sylvan Mirage 8522 comes in two different versions, with only slight changes to the layout differentiating between the CR and LZ versions. Our time onboard the LZ version showed her to be a comfortable boat in brisk chop and forgiving in sloppy conditions generated by 20 mph winds. Power1 x 150-hp Evinrude E-TEC 150 Sylvan Mirage 8522 LZ (2013-) Captain's Report By Capt. Steve-- Mission Statement The mission of the Sylvan Mirage 8522 LZ is to provide a comfortable and luxurious pontoon boat at a cost-efficient price point. She's offered in two versions, with slight modifications to the seating layout differentiating between the two. With her RPT toon design she gets on plane fast which should appeal to watersports enthusiasts. The Sylvan Mirage 8522 LZ. The Sylvan Mirage is an open and inviting boat with a comfortable layout. Distinguishing Features • Four Admiral’s Chairs. These chairs are as comfortable as can be because they swivel and even recline. The armrests are self leveling. Some boats have one or two, but we rarely see four. • Painted Fencing. We typically see panels that are fixed with decals to add highlights. These are actually painted and offered in a choice of four colors. • All Aluminum Transom. This is a departure from the extended pressure-treated wood platforms, mostly covered in carpet, that we normally see. • Standard Docking Lights. There are few things in boating more restful than a sunset cruise on an inland lake in the summer. And its nice to see the approaching dock when coming home. • RPT Tubes. Sylvan calls this Revolutionary Planing Technology and it not only offers quicker times to plane, but the Mirage gets up on plane from a level attitude. The tubes also have a 20-degree deadrise to a hard chine on both sides of the toon, much like a deep-V monohull or the pontoons on a sea planes, which usually have a 24-degree deadrise. • 6-Year Warranty. Sylvan offers a 6-year warranty on all components from stem to stern. Its toons and marine plywood deck are warranted for a lifetime and are transferrable to a second owner, according to the company. Even on our choppy test day, the Mirage manages to keep the spray down low providing a dry ride. Tube Construction Pontoon construction is moving more and more into an advanced area providing boats with more sportboat-like characteristics. The design team at Sylvan call their design RPT for Revolutionary Planing Technology and they seem to have an interesting, and effective take on how it's done. The tubes are 25” (63.5 cm) across with flat sides. The bottom takes on the contour of a V-hull sportboat with flat chines and, what could accurately be described as a 20-degree deadrise bottom. There's even a keel at the bottom to aid in tracking. The bottoms of the tubes are reminiscent of a V-hull boat, complete with chines and keel. The engine mounting pod is even more characteristic of a boat hull with a vertical stem and sharp entry and a bottom that gets lower as the design moves aft. There are even two planing fins with beveled outer edges mounted to the sides. Lifting strakes are added to the front of the tubes. The pod unit that the engine is mounted to has a descending keel, lifting wings and a sharp entry. There is nothing on the market quite like it. The tubes are two piece with a single seam down the center. Tubes are mounted to the deck with “M” brackets for solid support. The corners of the deck are protected with a stainless guard to absorb impact against the dock. Each has non-skid for boarding as well. Performance The Sylvan Mirage 8522 LZ has a LOA of 23'10" (7.26 m) and a beam of 8'6" (2.59 m). With an empty weight of 2,295 lbs.(1,041 kg), 30 gallons (113.6 L) of fuel, two people and test power on board we had a test weight of 3,313 lbs. (1,503 kg). With a 150-hp Evinrude E-TEC turning a 15 5/8 x 13" SSP prop we reached a top speed of 5650 rpm of 34.9 mph. At that speed fuel burn was 15.7 gph giving us a range of 60 miles. She doesn't really have a best planing speed so users can determine for themselves whether they want to go far or fast. With that said, I found her to be most comfortable at 3500 rpm and 20.5 mph. That produced a fuel burn of 6.3 gph which the Sylvan Mirage could keep up for 4 hours and 18 min. and 88 miles. Hole-Shot Wizard. Thanks to the RPT tubes and her 2-stroke Evinrude E-TEC power we reached planing speed in only 2.6 seconds, accelerated through 20 mph in 3.4 seconds and 30 mph in 6.2 seconds. These are remarkable times for what is essentially a twin-toon boat. Handling The 8522 LZ seems to come up on plane from a level attitude thanks to the wings mounted from the sides of the extended engine pod. Engine trim seems to have little to no effect as I noticed no difference in the spray coming from the sides of the boat or in the speed as we cruised along the lake. We put her through a fairly punishing test amid chop generated by 20 mile-an-hour winds. Testing in these kinds of conditions can bring out the worst in a pontoon boat. They can hobby horse or drench the passengers aboard. Happily, the Mirage 8522 performed well. The ride was surprisingly dry and while we did experience some hard bumps, it was nothing more than what was to be expected when running nearly 35 mph into consecutive speed bumps in the face of 20-mph winds. (The apparent wind was 55 mph.) With the two tubes being spaced well apart, I did notice some flexing of the foredeck, but again nothing more than expected on a twin-tube design. When turning I noticed that she tends to lean to the outside of the turns roughly 4 ½- degrees. This is the nature of virtually all twin-toon pontoon boats, and the Mirage 8522 LZ is no exception. FYI -- catamaran powerboats do the same thing, and it is just the nature of the design. The Comfort Factor. As noted above, the RPT hulls are not round, but rather have a 20-degree deadrise. Just as in monohulls, where a 20 to 24-degree deadrise is molded into the bottom to make the boat more comfortable at high speed in a wicked chop, so, too, does the Mirage 8522 LZ have a 20-degree deadrise in each of its toons for the same reason. And while I have no gauge to measure it, the seat of pants tells me that this boat was more comfortable barreling through the chop than conventional twin toons. For years we have tried getting video on all sorts of boats in choppy conditions, but the camera is all over the place and no one could watch the video, nor would it mean anything. That's why we shoot in flat water, as we did for this test in the lee of a peninsula. When it comes to ride, readers will just have to take my word for it. While this may look like a turn to starboard it is actually a turn to port and it shows how the Sylvan Mirage has a slight lean to the outboard side of the turn. This is something virtually all twin toons do. Here’s another view of the outboard turning characteristic. This was shot during a turn to starboard. Features Walkthrough Forward Deck A boarding gate at the bow leads to roomy bow seating that features three admiral’s chairs to the port side and a wraparound lounge to the starboard side just ahead of the helm. One of the two pedestal bases for the single standard pedestal table is mounted in the center of the foredeck. All seating is as comfortable as I've ever felt on any pontoon boat and the admiral’s chairs swivel and recline. An insulated cooler with drink holders lies between the two forward seats. It’s hard to picture a more welcoming gathering area in the bow of the Sylvan Mirage. Stainless steel speaker grills and drink holders are nestled into the seatback. Storage is under the seats and under the chaise seatback ensuring that all usable space has a purpose. Helm The helm of the Sylvan Mirage is an excellent example of elegant simplicity. The console is a beige tone to reduce glare and faux wood panels are recessed into tan vinyl. White-faced gauges with chrome bezels are to either side of the leather wrapped three-spoke wheel. A door to the side of the helm console allows access to the storage beneath. Directly across the helm is a portside boarding gate. The helm is in close proximity to both the fore and aft gathering areas keeping the captain in the center of the conversation. The faux wood panels have a classy look and white gauges with chrome bezels provide an eye-catching contrast. Always with pontoon boats the control is at nearly a 45-degree angle... even here, when a separate mounting point is molded into the console. The lower panel curves around the inside of the console and Sylvan created an MP3 holder next to the jack and 12V power outlet. Stern The stern of our test boat featured wraparound seating with three of the seats having drink holders embedded into the seatbacks. The seats to both sides also had stainless steel grilles mounted to the speakers. The forward ends of the seats are 2’ 4 ½” (.71m) across and the seats themselves are 3'5" (1.05 m) across. The corner seats had a battery to one side and a steering pump underneath the cushion to the other side. The remaining seats all have the usual accommodations for storage underneath. Yet another admiral’s chair lies across from the helm allowing the same vantage point that the captain enjoys. The center stern seat is removable allowing access to the aft boarding gate. Notice the optional teak-grain vinyl decking. The reboarding ladder is to starboard and the hinge point is nearly at the water level. The center-aft seat is removable allowing access to the stern gate and the swim platform. The seat can also be relocated to the bow to increase the seating in that area. The swim platform on our test boat was covered with the optional teak grain vinyl flooring. A reboarding ladder was secured to the starboard side but with its hinge point being so low to the water I found it difficult to retract from the deployed position. The Bimini support is made from BB square channel and the all-around nav light is mounted to the top. Observations My overall impression of the Sylvan Mirage is that she presents a very comfortable and functional entertaining platform with versatile seating that is among the most comfortable on any pontoon boat I have ever tested. By putting four admiral's seats on the Mirage 8522, everyone can be a grand pooh bah at least for some of the cruise. Don't snicker -- it's a great feeling and guests will love it. Her handling characteristics and hole shot times also make her an excellent watersports platform so feel free to bring the kids along on the next waterborne adventure. With a time to plane even oldsters will be able to get up on skis without much trouble. And that, together with her comfortable ride are this boat's strong suits. For those looking for even faster WOT speeds we suggest consideration of one of Sylvan's tri-toon hulls. Tri-toons are generally faster than twin toons. The Mirage 8522 is somewhat in the middle because of its centerline RPT engine pod that undoubtedly aids her time to plane and top speed of 34.9 mph top speed. The 215 DB has much more functionality than the boat it replaces and a full interior fiberglass liner. Equally as important, the model has style as well. We think beef with sizzle is a winning combination. The boat also has a surprising number of innovations, plus several good design details we have been urging builders to incorporate for years. We tested this boat with the wind howling at 20 knots and a long fetch so we got insight into how she handles in conditions beyond her job description.Key FeaturesStandard hull gel colors in Black, Patriot Blue and RedInterior upgrade to Desert SandStandard helm windscreen may be replaced by an optional wraparound windshield, providing additional wind protection in the cockpitAll-new helm design with upgraded easy-to-read instrumentation and sport steering wheelSpacious bow seating area with easy to reach grab handles and cup holdersA roomy in-floor locker accommodates skis, water toys and other gear. All new Bayliner deckboats have cockpit liners. Mission Statement The mission of the Bayliner 215 DB is to increase Bayliner's competitiveness in the popular and highly competitive deckboat market. Where previously we've seen Bayliner’s deckboats as simply open hulls with a lot of seating, now we're seeing much more functionality and creativity. Based on customer feedback, Bayliner discovered that over 30% of the dayboat market spends most of the day at the stern of the boat. For that reason, Bayliner focused a good portion of its new design on the aft seating at the swim platform. The Bayliner 215 DB comes standard with a smoked windscreen seen at the bottom. The wraparound windshield is offered as an option, otherwise both models are the same. The extended swim platform is optional on both models. Distinguishing Features • Capacity for 12. Massive L-shaped seating in the cockpit and a wide bow that carries the beam well forward allows for plenty of seating inside the 215 DB. • Three Across Transom Seating. Not only does she have lots of seating inside, she also has more seating at the transom to use when at anchor. • Windshield or No Windshield. Buyers can choose between having a wraparound windshield with a center walkthrough or a small windscreen over the helm console and an open walkthrough. • Removable Toy Storage Cubby Under the L-shaped seating is a plastic storage bin. This feature allows users to bring aboard a particular bin filled with the toys specific to the day’s mission, whether it is taking off to a remote beach, fishing, or simply heading out for a day on the water. • Flip-Up Cockpit Table. Recessed into the starboard bulwarks. This makes a great use of space and eliminates the need to find a place to store the table and a pedestal, and the hassle of setting it all up. • Compartmentalized Storage. The usual storage compartments are located under the bow seats and this time they feature a unique twist. Bayliner inserted removable dividers that separate the compartments into three individual storage spaces. This is a feature we've never seen before and the utility and functionality of it became immediately apparent as soon as the cushion was removed. • Hull Gel -- Black, Patriot Blue and Red. I like colored hulls but most builders charge extra for it. The 215 DB comes standard with a Black, Patriot Blue or Red hull which will set the boat apart from the pack. • Sterndrive Performance. The Bayliner 215 DB has an LOA of 20'7" (6.27 m), a beam of 8'6" (2.56 m) and a draft of 3’ (.91 m). With an empty weight of 4,027 lbs. (1,826 kg), 50 gallons (189 L) of fuel and two people on board we had a test weight of 4,747 lbs (2,153 kg). WOT With a 220-hp MerCruiser 4.3 L engine turning a 14.5 x 19 x 3 Black Max propeller powering our test boat, we reached a top speed at 5000 rpm of 45.7 mph. At that speed, fuel burn was 19.3 gph giving us a range of 117 miles. • Best Cruise. Best cruise came in at 3000 rpm and 26.3 mph. That reduced the fuel burn to only 6.45 gph which the 215 DB could keep up for seven hours and 49 minutes and 202 miles while still maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. We reached planing speed at 3.8 seconds, accelerated to 20 mph in 7.6 seconds and continued accelerating to 30 mph in 11.3 seconds. Five Engine Options. The 215 DB Bayliner offers engines from 190-hp to 260-hp. We tested with the 220-hp engine so the performance seen in our test has only one way to go with the more powerful engines. This range of options allows consumers to match the horsepower to the application, expected load aboard, and wallet. The Bayliner 215 DB has a top speed just under 46 mph with the base 4.3 L 220-hp engine. Handling Visibility at the helm was limited by the upper frame of the optional windshield that was right in my line of sight at no wake speed. However, at cruise speed the 215 DB has a five-degree bow high attitude which brings the center of the windshield directly in line of sight. Upon accelerating the bow comes up 16-degrees while staying well below the line of the horizon. Above the rubrail the 215 DB presents the squared off foredeck of the deckboat, but below she's all V-hull with a 16-degree deadrise at the transom. Bringing the trim up to the 1/4 mark on the trim gauge brought us into the five-degree cruising attitude where she seems to perform best. When turning, the 215 DB exhibits a 12-degree lean into the turns. Rough Water Test. We tested her in Sarasota Bay when it was blowing over 20 knots and there was a long fetch making the conditions so sloppy our photo boat had a hard time getting any video footage capable of being watched. Virtually all deckboats are intended for use in protected water and that is why they generally have low freeboard. In other words, we had the 215 DB in conditions beyond her intended envelope. Nevertheless, on the straight at high speed she stayed in control and did not oscillate. She handled following seas well because of her speed and the built-in buoyancy just under her foredeck. In beam seas she did rock back and forth from chine to chine as one might expect in such conditions. The 215 DB has an average cockpit depth of 32" which is quite deep for this type of boat, and in fact is more than some conventional bowriders this size. Overall, I came away with respect for this boat's ability to take care of herself in snotty conditions. In turns, the 215 DB leans 12-degrees into it. At no-wake speed the upper frame of the windshield is right in my line of sight, but at cruise visibility is excellent. Features Walkthrough Stern The stern received the major portion of the design creativity in the 215 DB. Customer feedback shows that a full 20% of the dayboat market spends most of their time at the stern, therefore it quickly became apparent that the same-old-same-old was not going to cut it. Here, Bayliner went with three across seating in a chaise lounge configuration. The port seat lifts to reveal storage underneath with the seat/hatch held open by dual gas assist struts. The seatbacks also elevate and get propped up by stands tucked behind. Frankly, all that's missing from the equation are drink holders and a stereo remote. Three across seating at the stern makes for a great place to hang out at any time that the 215 DB is not underway. Notice the chromed engine vents underneath. This aft seating is one of the big differences between the 215 DB and her outboard-powered sister, the 210 DB. The seatbacks can be propped up for those that don't need to be fully reclined in chaise lounge position. The portside seat lifts to reveal storage underneath. Standard Extended Swim Platform. It's surprising that Bayliner included a 2’ (.6 m) extended swim platform added to the 14” (35.6 cm) molded platform as a standard feature, simply because most affordable boats have this item as an option. It's a "must-have" addition for any boat destined to provide the space to easily launch towing as well as to be a comfortable swim platform. High marks to Bayliner for including it. A three-step reboarding ladder is mounted under the starboard quarter, directly in line with the walkthrough to the cockpit. When it comes to functionality of the stern at anchor, the 215 DB will be hard to beat no matter how expensive the boat. The extended swim platform is optional and includes a three-step reboarding ladder to starboard, in clear sight of the helm. Engine Compartment The 215 DB is a sterndrive-powered boat and the engine is accessed by manually lifting a hatch at the stern. A grab handle is exposed by pulling the seat cushion forward and reaching just under the seat back. Two gas-assist struts hold the hatch in the open position. The installation itself was a little tight but considering that no one will be crawling into this compartment, Bayliner did a good job of ensuring that the installation still allowed for easy access for daily engine checks and light maintenance. The engine is accessed by lifting a hatch that is held open by dual gas assist struts. Notice the seat to the right of the shot remains stationary. The aluminum fuel tank has a diurnal vent filtration system, the same equipment used on more expensive boats. The bilge pump is manually operated by a switch at the helm. There is room to the side of the engine for the battery, but Bayliner has chosen not to place it there. Rather, it is located inside the cockpit under the corner of the L-shaped seating where it is easier to access and install. At the bottom of the image is the electric bilge pump which is activated by a switch on the dash. To the left of the engine is the hose for the transom shower right next to an insulated cooler mounted in the deck to the walk-through to the cockpit. Options For Increased Utility To give its customers extra utility, Bayliner makes a couple of optional packages available so the whole family can enjoy their favorite watersports. Flight Series Option Our test boat was equipped with a Flight Series package that really added to the looks and functionality of the 215 DB. It includes the swim platform extension and a collapsible tower with the tow point 6'10" (2.08 m) off the deck. Board racks mounted to the outside of the tower will hold four racks in addition to any going into the usual sole storage compartment. The package also includes hull side graphics that, along with the forward facing tower, a Bimini top with boot, a color choice of Black, Red and Blue with deck gel strioe included and a stainless steel upgrade package, really adds to the "eye-candy" appeal to the 215 DB. The Flight Series package includes the hull side graphics and wakeboard tower (shown here without the board racks and integrated Bimini top). The optional Flight Series tower with the Bimini top installed. By removing a nut at the rear arch support, the wakeboard tower is able to collapse towards the windshield reducing the clearance so that the 215 DB can fit into a garage. Hint… wait till the boat is on the trailer to remove the nut. Fishing Package Option. Add specific fishing functionality to the 215 DB with fore and aft casting platforms, pedestal seats, livewell and a bow trolling motor. Cockpit Seating The cockpit is entered by a step down from the stern. As noted above, all three of Bayliner's new deckboats have full fiberglass interior liners. The L-shaped seating surrounding the cockpit not only allows for plenty of people to gather around but also adds to the comfort level of the 215 DB. It includes an aft facing chaise lounge and there's the usual storage under the seats with one unique exception. Underneath the portside seat is a removable clear plastic bin, typical used to store goods at home in the basement, garage or attic that keep moisture out. Bayliner's clever concept is to provide a dedicated space for interchangeable activity-specific bins. Going out fishing? Grab the fishing gear bin. Heading to the beach? Grab the bin with the snorkels, masks and frisbees. A space for removable storage bins allows for easy packing of the day's supplies, regardless of what the mission happens to be. At the walkthrough to the cockpit there's a transom shower and an in-deck insulated storage compartment that can be used as a cooler or a fish box. In addition to being an excellent gathering spot, the cockpit also serves as a convenient impromptu dining area. A flip up table is recessed into the starboard bulwarks and when deployed is within easy reach of not only the rear of the L-shaped seating but the swiveled helm seat, too. Bayliner was thinking out of the box when it located the battery here under the seat, making it easy to install, jump, and available to power air pumps without having to get into the engine room. The cockpit table is seen here in the retracted position nestled in the starboard bulwarks. … and the table seen here in the deployed position. Underneath, a flip out support holds the table in the elevated position. Sole Storage The sole storage compartment on the 215 DB is huge. It runs fore and aft 7'3" (2.2 m), has a depth of 14'' (35.6 cm) and the opening measures 40" x 14" (102 cm x 35.6 cm), easily making the compartment large enough for additional kneeboard, wakeboard or ski storage. The hatch is held open by a gas assist strut and a latch locks automatically upon closing, as opposed to having to turn it in just the right direction. This is another little detail that I like and I wish all builders would adopt it. The snap in carpeting on the deck is optional. The sole storage locker is more than large enough to accommodate wakeboards. Helm Console The helm has been completely redesigned rather than simply picking up with the same design from previous models. The panel remains a bright white but the angle of the optional windshield removed any concerns about glare. Gone are the mundane white-faced gauges with chrome bezels and in their place are much more modern 3-in-1 gauges with a pair of smaller gauges embedded in the lower right-hand corners. Bayliner completely redesigned the helm of this boat with a functional, clean layout. Dual multifunction gauges reduce clutter. The covered compartment underneath is self draining and rubber padding lines the bottom. This compartment is ideal for cell phones, keys and other small items. A space below the trim gauge will accommodate an optional digital depth indicator. Bayliner thoughtfully added two drink holders in the panel, a nice touch as one generally gets used for holding anything but drinks. A standard stereo remote is to the left of the panel. Dual rows of rocker switches flank the black three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel mounted to a tilt base. The only area that could use a little rethinking is how the 12V supply is on the complete opposite side of the panel from the MP3 port. This means the typical user will have a wire running across the dash, in one direction or another, from the MP3 player. I am very happy to see a covered self draining storage compartment below the gauges for an operator to put "stuff". I have been urging builders to do this for years and I'm happy to see that the Bayliner designers agree. Bayliner added an armrest next to the helm seat. A hinged top to take advantage of the space inside for storage would be my suggestion for the Mark II version. A door to the left of the console opens to reveal storage that includes dedicated space for a 25 quart (23.6 L) carry-on cooler. The door is secured with a stainless piano hinge and it closes against the gasket, completely surrounding the opening to eliminate annoying vibration while the 215 DB is underway. A 25 quart (23.6 L) cooler gets a dedicated spot inside the helm console. Port Console The port console comes standard as a roomy storage compartment that can be easily made into a head with the addition of an optional Porta-Potti. A strap at the hinge point prevents the door from opening far enough to slam into the helm console. It's cramped inside with headroom measuring 3'6" (1.1 m), so, in the head configuration, it certainly won't be used for any "false alarms". But sexist as it may sound, with women aboard necessity trumps comfort so high marks to Bayliner for including the option. It's also ideal for children. An opening portlight in the hull provides ventilation. The port console can be used for storage or an optional Porta-Potti converts it to a head. Bow Seating The space between the dual consoles is 20” (51 cm) wide and leads to a wide open bow that is characteristic of the deckboat genre. With the beam being carried so far forward I measured 5'11" (1.8 m) between the padded bolsters and 2'6" (.8 m) between the seat cushions for the foot well. While seated there was just enough room for me to stretch my legs to the forward seat backs and with the seatbacks raised slightly above the caprails, it creates a padded armrest wrapping around the bow. Speakers and grab handles are tucked underneath the side bolsters. A strap at the inside of the cushions not only adds another grab point but also allows for easy removal of the cushions and serves as another example of how Bayliner has gotten the hang of adding thoughtful features that don't add much expense. The bow offers plenty of room for seating and an optional filler cushion will turn the entire space into a sun pad. Clever Storage Forward. Of course there are the usual accommodations for storage underneath the forward cushions, but Bayliner added a little creativity here as well. Inside the side storage compartments are dividers that, in effect, separate the compartment into three individual storage bins. The dividers are removable making the storage customizable. This is a clever feature that we've never seen before and the utility and functionality of it became apparent as soon as the cushion was removed. The forward cushion is also removable to reveal covered storage. Here’s an interesting feature… the storage compartments under the two side seats are compartmentalized and the dividers are easily removed to customize the storage. Foredeck Forward of the bow seating is deck space with hatches over two storage compartments flanking a concealed three-step beach reboarding ladder. This not only serves as a great spot for jumping into the water, but adds to the functionality of the 215 DB should an owner choose to add the optional fishing package that will have a pedestal seat and a trolling motor in this location. Pricing The MSRP including freight, fees, fuel surcharge and some options is $36,863 with the standard 220-hp MPI/A1 4.3 L carbureted V-6 engine. (If you are wondering how a carbureted engine can be available in the U.S. -- outside of California -- the answer is because like the auto industry, companies in the marine business must meet overall emission requirements for the engines it sells in any given year. So some engines make up for others and it is the job of the builder to keep track.) When I look over the options list I see three items that I would recommend: 1) a cockpit cover, $700; 2) a Bimini top with boot, $786; and, 3) the swim platform extension, $843. The bow of the 215 DB offers roomy storage compartments to either side of a concealed three-step reboarding ladder. Observations Bayliner set out to re-create its deckboat lineup and it's clear that its designers surveyed the most popular deckboats on the market and tried to incorporate the best features in the new Bayliner 215 DB. She is loaded with thoughtful features, and a good dose of innovations that are sure to elevate Bayliner’s competitive stance in the deckboat arena. An outboard version of the Bayliner 215 DB is also available. She is called the 210 DB and comes standard with a 150-hp EFI 4-stroke Mercury. While the forward 75% of the boat is the same as the 215, the stern configuration is quite different and I think anyone in the market for a deckboat should at least take a look at the outboard iteration. Our test and full Captain's Report can be found here…Bayliner 215 DB (2014-) Test Result HighlightsTop speed for the Bayliner 215 DB (2014-) is 45.7 mph (73.5 kph), burning 19.30 gallons per hour (gph) or 73.05 liters per hour (lph). I am advertising this boat for sale, for a friend that has been building and restoring wood boats for many years. He is from the Port Huron MI area, but now resides in Ga. and continues his craft. This launch is a new custom build using a derelict 1910’s era transport launch as a pattern. The original launch was used to transport people and mail on the St Clair river to and from Harsens Island. It was found around the Alganac area and was thought to be a Chris Smith, but found out later it is not. Some said it might be from a Marine City boatyard. Who knows? The original engine and rudder were missing. It had bench seats along the sides and a starboard navigation light board with the name Redhead carved in it. He built this launch using the original stem and skeg. He also retained the original hull shape using the derelict as a pattern. The new construction consists of: Single length white oak steam bent framing Framing skinned with 1/4" Ocoume marine plywood and sealed with West, Smith’s and Z-Spar paint on interior. 3M 5200 adhesive and ½” x 3” mahogany planking on bottom and sides Mahogany planking on the decks in a beautiful Herringbone pattern Custom built interior using all solid mahogany. Shaped bench seat arms with rosettes. Flooring is ¾” to 1” mahogany boards built using dado joinery and epoxy. Spray stained and varnished. Bottom and side paint is Z-Spar with decks and interior being finished with many coats of Z-Spar Captains varnish. High quality marine upholstery, stainless steel trim, glass windshield and vintage chromed hardware. The engine is from a 1960‘s Lyman lap strake boat. It is a 4 cylinder 120 hp OMC marine engine with a conversion kit. The transmission is a Velvet Drive. Both are in good condition. Mounted gauges for RPM, Oil Pressure and Water Temperature. This engine has more power than the boat needs and easily gets it to a cruise speed of about 12 mph. This launch hull was not designed to plane or run faster. Just cruise. The trailer is tandem axle with surge brakes on the front axle. Double bunked to fit this boat. New bearings and bearing buddies. All lights work. The tires have decent tread but are old. Fine for hauling around here, but I would not feel comfortable using them for a long trip. There is no spare. The trailer came from Michigan with the derelict boat years ago. It is not titled or registered. A bill of sale will be provided. If needed, the owner can raise the boat and trailer to load on your flat bed trailer. This boat was registered in Georgia by the owner/builder in 2007, as a 2007 built Chris Craft replica. The GA issued HIN is 38R29. The registration has expired. Georgia is a non title state for boats. A Georgia Bill Of Sale will be provided. The boat is in very good condition with the exception of a couple small spots of dock rash on the wood rub rail. It has always been stored on the trailer in a closed shop. The registration numbers are made of brass and screwed on. The owner will remove them, fill the screw holes and touch up the paint if desired. I think this launch would look great with a brass, stainless or wood plate on each side for the registration numbers. It has been used in many regional ACBS boat shows with very little use otherwise. The owner/builder is a long time ACBS member. High quality materials and craftsmanship in a reliable and beautiful antique style boat. E-mail with any questions. Boat can be inspected with appointment. A ride on the lake will be provided by the owner when payment is made to him. This boat is being advertised for sale locally and this listing may be cancelled at any time. The price the owner is asking is already heavily discounted to move this boat. He will be selling several more as time permits. This fine piece of craftsmanship is being sold by the owner as a used boat with used trailer and are being sold "as is" with no warranty, liability or returns offered. I am acting to advertise this boat for sale by the owner only and I will have no part in the matters of Payment and Bill of Sale. The buyer also acknowledges and agrees to Hold Harmless the advertiser in any matters of ownership or liability. The non-refundable $300 deposit is to pay the ebay fees only, which are non-refundable to me to advertise this boat for sale by the owner.
