CLOUD, FL This low hours Sea-Doo Challenger is in very good condition. Its 255 hp Rotax engine can push it and its top passenger load of 8 (eight) person very nicely. The upholstery has no rips or tears and the gelcoat shows it has always been garage stored. Fully equipped with cockpit covers, bimini, stereo, trailer, digital gauges. Boat Test Captain's Report Sea-Doo 180 Challenger SE By Capt. Rob Smith First released in 2005, the 180 Challenger is Sea-Doos answer to entry level boating with a positive twist. Simple, really; they use direct drive which eliminates a lot of the associated maintenance you have with stern drives. This also broadens the area you can boat in because it only draws 12 and adds a margin of safety since you dont have a propeller spinning at 700 to several thousand rpm just under the swim platform. Dont get directly behind any boat as it is taking off as you still can get hurt being this close to any vehicle in motion. Direct drive boats also add an extra bit of handling and quicker response over many of their sterndrive cousins. Once you learn to use the direct drive engine around the docks, you will love it. The power The standard power in the 180 Challenger SE is a 215-hp Rotax direct drive engine. This 4-TEC engine is a three cylinder, four stroke 1.5 liter engine rated for a maximum rpm of 8000. The drive unit is an axial flow single-stage pump with stainless steel impeller and 6 ¼ pump diameter. Cooling is closed-loop, so the only raw water is through the jet drive pump which has Sea-Doos Inlet Clearing System to help clear debris if you pick up any when running. The seating and room onboard Seating is a feature you will appreciate when your friends all want to come along. For an 18 footer, she has plenty of seating with a rated capacity of 8 people, or 1440 lbs. of people and gear combined. In the cockpit, you feel like you are on a larger boat. I imagine that is because the direct drive system doesnt have to eat up more room for the transmission and mechanicals associated with that. Between the large sole locker for boards and seat base storage, I believe you will have room for all the stuff the gang will want to bring along. The surprise in storage was the access to the stern storage lockers. There is dual access through the seat bases on the aft seats, and from hatches on the aft end from the swim platform. I had two PFD kits stuffed in the starboard box alone. Over on port the battery and switch were easily accessible with the lid open. Water is drawn from beneath the boat and forced through a pump inside the engine compartment, and then ejected out the back of the boat through a 6-inch diameter nozzle to propel the boat. With rare exceptions, a propeller must be located under the bottom of a boat so it can bite into undisturbed water. Since a jet drive sucks water from below the boat and shoots it out the back, the Challenger 180 can go into water almost as shallow as the hull, about twelve inches. And with no outdrive to raise, beaching the boat is simple. One disadvantage to jets, the pump can get clogged with seaweed or debris, which is most likely to occur in very shallow water with a lot of loose seaweed on the bottom. Sea-Doo’s ICS system (Inlet Clearance System) cleans debris from the intake grid, but large amounts could still foul the pump. Improved Maneuverability Another advantage to Sea-Doo’s jet power is uncanny maneuverability. Because the jet system is always pumping water whenever the engine is running but redirecting the water for neutral or reverse, jet boats of the past were notoriously squirrelly in neutral and reverse. After testing two different Sea-Doo sportboats, I’m pleased to say the company has taken what was once considered a negative and turned it into a huge positive, particularly for beginner boaters. With the engine running and the shift in neutral, the Challenger 180 sits nearly stationary, drifting with the wind like a propeller driven boat would. But even though it is not “in gear”, the boat still steers by simply turning the wheel, hovering in one spot but still in control. To maneuver, just turn the wheel until the bow is pointed in the desired direction, shift into forward, and steer normally. While a twin engine boat with a bow thruster comes close, I have yet to run a conventional-powered recreational boat that has this ability. A third advantage to jet power, is not having a propeller outside the boat, creating much less chance of injuring a skier or swimmer, although it is always prudent to turn the engine off when a swimmer is alongside. Since a jet boat is always pumping water while running, I find it makes people turn the engine off instinctively – something often ignored on conventionally powered boats. Power and Performance To power the jet, Sea-Doo offers two Rotax engine choices, a 3-cylinder 185 horsepower four-stroke engine, and a similar engine with a supercharger and intercooler that develops 215 horsepower. Our test boat, equipped with the larger engine, topped out at 46 mph, and cruised quite economically at 28.7 mph, burning just 9.1 gph or 3.15 mpg. The boat planned off in 3.8 seconds and went from 0 to 30 in 7 seconds, with plenty of pulling power for water toys. Plenty of Features The layout of the boat should appeal to family boaters. Sea-Doo calls it a 20-foot cockpit in an 18-foot boat, and I must admit, it does have a lot of room for an 18-footer. There is plenty of seating, a large sun pad with the bow filler cushion installed, and adequate storage. The swim deck is nice too, with a telescoping boarding ladder and well placed handrails to make it easy to climb aboard. The new Challenger 180 has some great features, plus the added safety and maneuverability of Sea-Doo’s jet system, making it a great choice for an all-around family boat. Best cruise for the Sea-Doo Challenger 180 (2006-) is 28.7 mph (46.2 kph), and the boat gets 3.15 miles per gallon (mpg) or 1.34 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 60 miles (96.56 kilometers). I'm selling a 2008 Seadoo Challenger 180 SE. It has one 215 HP supercharged engine. Its a closed loop system (uses antifreeze instead of water for cooling) so you don't have to winterize it. I'll take a bunch more pictures this evening as well. Options: Trailer w/ spare wheel and foldable toungue Wakeboard tower (folds down) Extra battery added w/ selector switch Extra speakers w/ amplifier (brand new head unit and amp) Details: I bought this boat last winter (because that's when you get the deals) with 49 hours total on it. The last owner said it probably needed a supercharger rebuild because it didn't go as fast as did when he first bought it. Top speed is about 45mph and he was only getting to 35mph. A friend of a friend owns a Seadoo repair shop near lake Texoma gave me the low down on these boats (superchargers last around 80 hours or less, make sure the motor is sound because you don't want to rebuild one, told me what to look for etc) In addition he agreed to do all the work at a fair price if I bought the boat. So I went to look at it and bought it. I then took it straight to him and had the following done: Complete supercharger rebuild Jet pump service New Impeller and wear ring Extra battery added w/ selector switch Oil change A few other things I'm forgetting Condition: The boat is near mint. It has around 56 hours on it now. There might be one small scuff on one decal and the interior is perfect. Its always been stored in a garage or in my case under a metal awning w a cover on it. I *think* some stitching is coming loose on the bimini top but that's easily fixed. Why am I selling the boat after spending all that money on it? Here's a few reasons 1) I want to get better at wakeboarding and this thing doesn't put out a big enough wake 2) I'm not a big fan of jet boats...after having a few beers I find it difficult to maneuver them in a safe manner 3) I'm honestly not a big fan of Seadoo boats...I've already dropped about $2,500 dollars on this thing, replaced about everything I thought I could to make this boat problem free, and the last time I went out this beeping noise went off from the dash and threw out a code and wouldn't let the boat start. I turned the ignition off and on again....and then it started up. I had to go through this routine every time I started the boat and it really pisses me off. I called up my repair guy, gave him the code, and asked him what the deal is. Long story short its a common sensor issue and the sensor is pita to get to. He recommended I just deal with cycling the ignition every time to start it because it won't hurt anything. That sent me over the edge...I'm done with this thing and its ready for a new owner. Clean title in hand and ready to transfer. I reserve the right to end early because this boat is also for sale locally.
